The counter rail is fix along the top of the featheredge on the same side as the arris rails. The capping rail covers the end grain of the feather edge boards and the counter rail. The capping rail is nailed or screwed to the edge of the counter rail. This capping rail stops water getting into the end grain of the boards extending their life, it also gives the feather edge boards extra strength and enhances the look of the fence.
